Two local barbecue restaurants rated among the best in New Jersey

We arrived at the unofficial start of the 2022 summer season as Memorial Day weekend arrived.

With that, the grill will be out, with burgers, hot dogs and plenty of barbecues on those summer nights on the Jersey Shore.

With May being National Barbecue Month, writer Peter Genovese went to rank the 33 best barbecue restaurants in the state of New Jersey, with two local establishments making the cut.

It’s for traditional southern barbecue, and both of these places are a cut above when it comes to southern New Jersey,

Henri’s Hotts Barbecue, located in Folson, is described as a “low-key shack serving barbecue and American classics including steaks, sandwiches, and burgers,” ranking 22nd on the overall list of 32 barbecues.

“Perhaps my most embarrassing food moment happened at Henri’s Hotts Barbecue, when I asked for all white meat on my whole fried chicken here. “Sir, there’s no white meat on a whole chicken,” said owner, harumph. “When you find it, let me know.” My excuse: It was the end of a long day, and I had eaten and driven a lot. Excellent ribs, pulled pork are the real deal, and the sides are possibly the heaviest of any barbecue in the state. And that fried chicken is the best I’ve had in a long time.”

I recently rated them one of the best burgers in South Jersey and they’re not known for their delicious BBQ – translation? The food is worth the trip!

Next, ranking just outside the Top 10 at #11 is Back Bay BBQ on Longport Boulevard just before entering Somers Point from the island, which is technically Egg Harbor Township.

“Back Bay is a BBQ restaurant with a nice little outdoor patio. Back Bay has possibly the best ribs I’ve eaten in the last four or five years. Back Bay is not in Somers Point because the website says, but in Egg Harbor Township.”

Their website says they started as a roadside hobby and have grown into something more, well, they are more than just a roadside stop, they are one of the best BBQ joints in the state!
